Grab That Book Classroom Library
The most valuable activity for developing student understanding and comprehension of their world is to read. Grab That Book encourages students to independently choose a book from the Classroom Library Units to read at any point in their day. The more a student’s time is given to reading the more reading becomes a prediction of their development of language skills overall.
In regards to changes to your Districts Mandated Curriculum or changes within the United States Department of Education Standard, materials in each Classroom Library Unit can be supplemented or shifted from other areas for use to augment subject changes. This will be helpful during Curriculum adoptions and for specific subject alignment needs of the classroom teacher.
Our objective in developing this program is to label the books in a way that is invisible to the student, so that the student does not feel 'labeled'. Label the Book, Not the Child! We are committed to the idea that each student does not see the subtle changes in their comprehension. It is our intention that all students are reading for practice and enjoying great books!
GTB How Does It Work?
This program strives to teach children of all levels to enjoy reading by providing books which are fun, educational and at their independent reading level without labeling the child. Each Classroom Library Level Set is geared to your classroom reading level. The Levels are BR through Level 7. Within each Classroom Set, the books have stickers on them based on the Lexile™ level. While the educator is well aware of the meaning of each sticker, the children are oblivious to them and therefore, do not feel any pressure to "keep up." The non-competitive nature of the program lets every child read at his/her comfort and interest level. And, since the only way a person improves their reading ability is by reading, the reading experience is a fun and positive one. With the gradual change between reading levels in the collection, a child can grab a title below their level and enjoy the practice of reading or grab one above their level and expand his ability without getting frustrated. It is simply one of the easiest and most affordable Classroom Library reading programs available.
The program strives to be flexible with changing Student Lexile™ scores. At anytime a full collection of materials can be re-assigned to another class due to expected increases in Student Lexile™ scores. In expectation of adjustments to future Student Lexile™ scores sufficient materials (250 books per classroom level set) have been presented for teachers to share, exchange or augment after they have determined that their class has met and excelled beyond the average Lexile™ book score that is presently in their collection.
Teachers and Grade Level Teams may choose to direct students and use current reading instructional techniques to challenge student's instructional reading levels using the Grab that Book & Read materials. Teachers will have a key to the coded labels and can pre-select materials from the collection that will challenge students rather than frustrating them. Teachers may choose books for other instructional methodologies such as instruction in fluency. The more a student reads the more fluency and comprehension in context of specific academic areas will develop. This will challenge a student’s background knowledge while heightening their interest to read more within the context of academic themes. Students will be mentally stimulated in a way that readies them to increase their Recreational Reading and Instructional Reading without being frustrated by text that is too hard. For students who are reading at higher or lower Lexile™ scores that are not present in the classroom collection, the teacher can borrow materials from lower and higher grades or use materials that come from the school library that match the Lexile™ levels. Instructional and independent reading in the classroom are both essential in creating and maintaining a fluid increase in Lexile™ scores.
